Texas Hold'em Rules

Overview

Texas Hold'em is the most popular form of poker in the world. Each player is dealt two private cards (known as "hole cards") that belong to them alone. Five community cards are dealt face-up on the "board." All players in the game use these shared community cards in conjunction with their own hole cards to each make their best possible five-card poker hand.

The Goal

The objective of Texas Hold'em is to win the "pot" — the sum of money bet by players during the hand. A hand can be won either by having the best poker hand at showdown, or by betting/raising enough that all other players fold.

Blinds

Before any cards are dealt, the two players to the left of the dealer post forced bets called "blinds." The player immediately to the left posts the "small blind" and the player two seats to the left posts the "big blind" (usually double the small blind). These ensure there is money in the pot to play for from the start.

Betting Rounds

A hand of Texas Hold'em consists of four betting rounds:

1. Pre-Flop

After receiving their two hole cards, players act in clockwise order starting from the player to the left of the big blind. Each player can fold (give up their hand), call (match the current bet), or raise (increase the bet).

2. The Flop

Three community cards are dealt face-up on the board. A new round of betting begins, starting with the first active player to the left of the dealer.

3. The Turn

A fourth community card is dealt face-up, followed by another round of betting.

4. The River

The fifth and final community card is dealt face-up, followed by the last round of betting.

Showdown

If two or more players remain after the final betting round, there is a showdown. Players reveal their hole cards, and the best five-card poker hand using any combination of their hole cards and the five community cards wins the pot.

Hand Rankings (Highest to Lowest)

1. Royal Flush — A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit
2. Straight Flush — Five consecutive cards of the same suit
3. Four of a Kind — Four cards of the same rank
4. Full House — Three of a kind plus a pair
5. Flush — Five cards of the same suit (not consecutive)
6. Straight — Five consecutive cards of mixed suits
7. Three of a Kind — Three cards of the same rank
8. Two Pair — Two different pairs
9. One Pair — Two cards of the same rank
10. High Card — The highest card when no other hand is made

Common Actions

• Fold — Discard your hand and forfeit the pot
• Check — Pass the action to the next player (when no bet has been made)
• Call — Match the current bet
• Raise — Increase the current bet
• All-In — Bet all of your remaining chips
